Growing Up
Good evening fellow toastmasters
and distinguished guest.
I am standing here this evening
to share what I have had several days ago. One day after our daily toastmasters
meeting, last week, my boss gathering me and the entire member of the office at
the internal meeting.
We usually have an internal
meeting if there are some issue or just introduce a new employee formally. So, at the last internal meeting, my boss
just gave an update news about merger issue between my office with one of a
consultant company from America.
This merger issue is like one of
opportunities for my office to growing up. Talk about growing up, my boss said that the
company will grow up if the people in that company are grow up too. And furthermore,
he said that grow up is about innovative and walk out from our comfort zone.
He shared some stories to me and
other.
Any one of you knows Mr. Tirto Utomo? Raised your hands if you know him.
Yeah, he is the one who established
aqua. And now he is the owner of 30% stock of Danone, a company from France. Early
in his career, Mr Tirto Utomo works for pertamina.
The first idea to create aqua
came from his personal experience when his friends from abroad complained that
they had a stomachache because of the water in Indonesia. So at that moment, with
his capability, he tried to serve a good water to his friends from abroad if
they are in Indonesia. But as time goes by, his empathy was getting bigger and
bigger. Not only worried about his friends, he also worried about Indonesian
people if they are continuously consuming bad water.
This is what my boss means about
walk out from our comfort zone. Mr Tirto Utomo then left pertamina even his
career was good at there,
yeah we all know that pertamina is a big company with a good benefit for their
employees. But Mr Tirto Utomo
walks out from his comfort zone, follows his empathy and now he’s getting
better better and better. I guess 100% better from the director of pertamina
itself right now.
And talk about innovation, here
is another story from my boss.
I will ask all of you again, is there any one of you that knows a
company named Pama Persada?
Pama Persada is Indonesia’s
leading mining operations company. One subsidiary of a big manufacturing
company in Indonesia , that is Astra
International. Same as another company, Several
years ago, pama persada has an issue to be resolved.
They have a lot of heavy
equipment as they are a mining operation company. And all of those heavy
equipment have a capability to work as long as 24 hours. But, those heavy
equipment just work well on the sunny day, they can slip if the rain is
falling.
So, you can imagine how much the
company’s profit is wasted when the rain season is coming. The management then
asks one of a division in the
company , a creative division if iam
not mistaken, to take a holiday and get back with an idea to solve the
problem.
One day, one of an employee came
to the management, he told them that he just inspired by one of a big supermarket, carefour. You
know, carefour is have a flat escalators that can lock the trolley, so the
trolley not sliding down? that’s what is the employee thinking about. He think
about what if the heavy equipment have a special rail that can lock them so
that the heavy equipment can work even the rain is falling.
Surprisely, the
management gave a big concern about that idea. Then make a two thousand dollars research for the idea. of
course that is a big expense for the company at that moment. But that’s what the
company should do to find the way to solve the problem, right?.
After consult to a machine
company in japan, the idea from one of the employee can be realized. Then the
company ordered that special heavy equipment to japan’s industry and make a
right patent to their special heavy equipment. Now, pama persada have a special
heavy equipment that can work as long as 24 hours and they sold that special
heavy equipment to Freeport with an expensive price.
That’s the story. What we can get is, we will never know how much
the result or the profit that we can get from an innovation.
Just try to
always think an innovation, walk
out from our comfort zone, and we will make a better life, not only for
ourselves but also for the others.
